(Phoenix-Arizona) – Combining custom and green building techniques is a feat many aspire to, and recently two companies combined to achieve that goal. Chaffey Homes, a luxury home builder that recently expanded into Arizona with its new Tranquil Trail Estates development, and GMS Architectural Group, succeeded in building the Single-Family Custom Green Home of the Year, according to National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), which awarded the honor at the NAHB National Green Building Conference held recently in New Orleans.

The home incorporates several, green elements, including energy efficiency, water conservation, reused materials, sustainably produced and durable materials, healthy indoor air, efficient use of space, and low-impact site development and natural landscaping and luxury features.
The home won for its productive use of environmentally-sound designs including, for example, solar power, high efficiency windows, awnings to reduce sun exposure, ENERGY STAR appliances and water-saving appliances.
More distinctive approaches to the green project came with the reuse of materials from the deconstruction of the original home. Eighty percent of materials were diverted from landfills and reused in the construction of the home. Doors, cabinets and other items were salvaged and reused in the home, and wine racks were made from salvaged decking from the original structure. The home project received certifications from NAHB, Energy Star, Environments for Living, LEED for Homes, Seattle-area Built Green, and the American Lung Association Healthy House.
