Chaffey Homes of Washington Expands into Arizona with Carefree Estates
Chaffey Homes, a Washington homebuilder, is expanding into Arizona with a luxury development in Carefree called Tranquil Trail Estates.
The company, run by brothers Rick and Bob Chaffey, expects its first models to open in October or November, with homes priced from $1.2 million.
The brothers attribute their ability to expand in the down market to the philosophy of their father and company founder Herb Chaffey: You prepare for a bad market in a good market and a good market in a bad market.
"My father has been a homebuilder since 1963," said Bob Chaffey, co-president of Chaffey Homes. "In that time, he learned a great deal about the homebuilding market, and one of his signature phrases has put us in a position to continue doing what we do best, even in this market."
The company chose Arizona for its similarities to the Seattle market.
"There are some striking similarities between Seattle and Arizona," said Arizona State University graduate Rick Chaffey, co-president of Chaffey Homes. "In Seattle, we are in Microsoft country, and there a lot of successful, entrepreneurial people who have certain expectations and appreciate quality. That is what we see in many areas of Arizona as well."
